In this episode of the Because You're Incredible Podcast, Dr. Maria Wisman and I discuss the importance and benefit of strength training for all populations including, but not limited to, athletes, persons with disabilities, children and the aging population. Maria is a Physical Therapist and Personal Trainer who works with a variety of individuals, focusing her efforts more recently toward developing strength and conditioning programs for cheerleaders.
As a Physical Therapist she explains the importance of strength training in developing skill and injury prevention. In our conversation, Maria busts some of the myths surrounding limitations to who should weight lift. She strives to make lifting accessible by training those who may not initially feel comfortable or confident in a gym setting. She is also certified as an adaptive & inclusive trainer to provide alternative methods of lifting for those in need.
In addition, we go in depth about what training a cheerleading team looks like including the general structure, schedule, and recommended lifts that each athlete would benefit from. She introduces her programming app that is available for both individuals and teams to receive instruction, guidance, and assessment.
