The Coaching for Leaders Podcast featured Oscar Trimboli, the author of "Deep Listening: Impact Beyond Words." In this discussion they mention that 80% of the population thinks they are a better listener than the average person. They also discuss four habits that can derail you from being an effective listener. The "villains" include the dramatic listener, the interrupting listener, the lost listener, and the shrewd listener. I go over a brief description of each of these villains but the episode dives even deeper. You can also go to listeningquiz.com to take a quick 7 min quiz to find out your primary and secondary villains are and they will provide some suggestions on how to improve your listening skills.

As we practice our listening skills remember that it is an ongoing process and will never quite be perfected. Having a better awareness of the habits that may be derailing your listening can help assist you in having deeper, more meaningful conversations. Ask yourself - what was a situation this week in which I got to practice better listening or noticed that I was not being an effective listener?
